Prelude

Welcome | Alan Charnock, Director of Community Engagement

Call to Worship
Leader: Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth. Sing praise to the Lord, to him who rides across the highest heavens.
All: Proclaim the power of God. Praise be to God!

Song of Praise | The Lion and the Lamb
He’s coming on the clouds
Kings and kingdoms will bow down
And every chain will break
As broken hearts declare His praise
For who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah
He’s roaring with power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before Him
Our God is the Lamb
The Lamb that was slain
For the sin of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow
Before the Lion and the Lamb
Every knee will bow before Him

So open up the gates
Make way before the King of Kings
The God who comes to save is here
To set the captives free
For who can stop the Lord Almighty

Who can stop the Lord Almighty

Song of Praise | You Alone
We will sing a new song for You
Of Your power, salvation, and truth
You are the victory
You can never be moved
On our knees we will worship You, Lord
On our knees we will worship You, Lord
Here with this offering
We come into Your courts

(Chorus)
Splendor and might, beauty and light
You alone are the Lord
You alone are the Lord
Glory and strength, great is Your name
You alone are the Lord
You alone are the Lord
Trembling here at Your feet
The whole earth, the whole earth is singing

Let our idols fall worthless aside
Those glittering, treacherous lies
We come to the richness
Of the Lord God on high
Let the seas rejoice with a shout
Let the fields and the forests cry out
Creation exulting
Let us sing it out loud!

(Chorus)

Prayer of Adoration (Concluded by the Lord’s Prayer)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Silent Praise and Thanksgiving

Doxology | Holy, Holy, Holy
Holy, holy, holy
Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning

Our song shall rise to thee
Holy, holy, holy,
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons
Blessed Trinity

Prayer of Confession
Lord God, we have sinned against you; we have done evil in your sight.
We are sorry and repent.
Have mercy on us according to your love.
Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.
Renew a right spirit within us and restore us to the joy of your salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Silent Confession

Words of Encouragement | Romans 5:6-8
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Prayers of the People

Songs of Praise | O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing
O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of His grace

Jesus, the name that charms our fears
That bids our sorrows cease
It’s music in the sinner’s ears
It’s life, and health, and peace

(Chorus)
He speaks, and listening to His voice
New life the dead receive
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice
The humble poor believe
The humble poor believe

He breaks the power of cancelled sin
He sets the prisoner free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me

My gracious Master and my God
Assist me to proclaim
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Your name

(Chorus)

Greetings and Announcements

Scripture Reading | Habakkuk 1

1 The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received.

Habakkuk’s Complaint
2 How long, Lord, must I call for help,
but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, “Violence!”
but you do not save?
3 Why do you make me look at injustice?
Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
Destruction and violence are before me;
there is strife, and conflict abounds.
4 Therefore the law is paralyzed,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice is perverted.

The Lord’s Answer
5 “Look at the nations and watch—
and be utterly amazed.
For I am going to do something in your days
that you would not believe,
even if you were told.
6 I am raising up the Babylonians,
that ruthless and impetuous people,
who sweep across the whole earth
to seize dwellings not their own.
7 They are a feared and dreaded people;
they are a law to themselves
and promote their own honor.
8 Their horses are swifter than leopards,
fiercer than wolves at dusk.
Their cavalry gallops headlong;
their horsemen come from afar.
They fly like an eagle swooping to devour;
9 they all come intent on violence.
Their hordes advance like a desert wind
and gather prisoners like sand.
10 They mock kings
and scoff at rulers.
They laugh at all fortified cities;
by building earthen ramps they capture them.
11 Then they sweep past like the wind and go on—
guilty people, whose own strength is their god.”

Habakkuk’s Second Complaint
12 Lord, are you not from everlasting?
My God, my Holy One, you will never die.
You, Lord, have appointed them to execute judgment;
you, my Rock, have ordained them to punish.
13 Your eyes are too pure to look on evil;
you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.
Why then do you tolerate the treacherous?
Why are you silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
14 You have made people like the fish in the sea,
like the sea creatures that have no ruler.
15 The wicked foe pulls all of them up with hooks,
he catches them in his net,
he gathers them up in his dragnet;
and so he rejoices and is glad.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net
and burns incense to his dragnet,
for by his net he lives in luxury
and enjoys the choicest food.
17 Is he to keep on emptying his net,
destroying nations without mercy?

Sermon | Hard Questions by Rev. Bijan Mirtolooi

Reflection Song | ‘Tis So Sweet To Trust in Jesus
’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
And to take Him at His word

Just to rest upon His promise
And to know, “Thus says the Lord!”

O how sweet to trust in Jesus

Just to trust His cleansing blood

And in simple faith to plunge me
’Neath the healing, cleansing flood

(Chorus)
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus
O for grace to trust Him more

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus
Just from sin and self to cease

Just from Jesus simply taking

Life and rest, and joy and peace

I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee

Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend
And I know that Thou art with me

Wilt be with me to the end

(Chorus)

Closing Song | Ascribe to the Lord
Ascribe to the lord
You heavens proclaim
Ascribe to the Lord
Glory and strength
The glory due his name
In the splendor of holiness
Ascribe to the Lord
In the day and the night
Ascribe to the Lord
All power and might
And in his name delight
The Lord our righteousness

(Chorus)
Ascribe to the lord
You heavens proclaim
Ascribe to the Lord
Glory and strength
The glory due his name
In the splendor of holiness
Ascribe to the Lord
In the day and the night
Ascribe to the Lord
All power and might
And in his name delight
The Lord our righteousness

The voice of the Lord moves the waters
The voice of the Lord is wonderful
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars
The voice of the Lord is powerful
The voice of the Lord is among us
He’s calling your name will you listen to his voice
He makes our broken hearts rejoice

(Chorus)

Come Lord Jesus, King above
Come and save the ones you love
Be our strength and our shield
And bless us with your peace
Come Lord Jesus, be our light
Pierce the dark, upend the night
Turn our sorrow to cries of glory
Our weeping to songs of joy

(Chorus)

And in his name delight
The Lord our righteousness
