Prelude
Welcome | Chris Weldon, Senior Director of Music & Worship
Call to Worship | Psalm 66
Leader: Shout for joy to God, all the earth! Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious.
All: All the earth bows down to you; they sing praise to you, they sing the praises of your name.
Song of Praise | Only a Holy God
Who else commands all the hosts of heaven?
Who else could make every king bow down?
Who else can whisper and darkness trembles?
Only a Holy God
What other beauty demands such praises?
What other splendor outshines the sun?
What other majesty rules with justice?
Only a Holy God
Come and behold Him
The One and the Only
Cry out, sing holy
Forever a Holy God
Come and worship the Holy God
What other glory consumes like fire?
What other power can raise the dead?
What other name remains undefeated?
Only a Holy God
Chorus
Who else could rescue me from my failing?
Who else would offer His only Son?
Who else invites me to call Him Father?
Only a Holy God
Only my Holy God
Chorus x 2
Song of Praise | A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing
Our helper, He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing
For still our ancient foe,
Who seeks to work us woe
Whose craft and power are great,
Is armed with cruel hate
On earth is not his equal
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing
Were not the right man on our side,
The man of God’s own choosing
You ask who that may be,
Christ Jesus, it is He
Lord God of Hosts, His name,
From age to age the same
And He must win the battle
And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us
We will not fear, for God has willed
His truth to triumph through us
The prince of darkness grim,
We tremble not for him
His rage we can endure,
For lo, his doom is sure
One little word shall fell him
That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abides in us
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Jesus Christ who sides with us
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also
The body they may kill,
God’s truth continues still
His kingdom is forever
Prayer of Adoration (concluded by the Lord’s Prayer)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Silent Praise and Thanksgiving
Doxology | Holy, Holy, Holy
Holy, holy, holy
Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to thee
Holy, holy, holy,
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons
Blessed Trinity
Prayer of Confession | From Psalm 51
Leader: Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy.
All: Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity, and cleanse us from our sin.
Leader: For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us.
All: Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight
Leader: Hide your face from our sins, and blot out all our iniquities.
All: Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us.
Silent Confession
Words of Encouragement | 1 John 3:1
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
Song of Praise | How Deep the Father’s Love for Us
How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the chosen one
Bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life;
I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer,
But this I know with all my heart:
His wounds have paid my ransom.

Scripture Reading | Luke 18:9-14
9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (NIV)
Sermon | Pharisees and the Tax Collector by Rev. Andrew Field
Time for Reflection
Reflection Song | Rock of Ages
Rock of Ages, cleft for me
Let me hide myself in Thee
Let the water and the blood
From Thy wounded side which flowed
Be of sin the double cure
Save from wrath and make me pure
Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands
Could my zeal no respite know
Could my tears forever flow
These for sin could not atone
Thou must save and Thou alone
Nothing in my hand I bring
Simply to Thy cross I cling
Naked come to Thee for dress
Helpless look to Thee for grace
Foul, I to the fountain fly
Wash me, Savior, or I die
While I draw this fleeting breath
When my eyes shall close in death
When I rise to worlds unknown
And behold Thee on Thy throne
Rock of Ages, cleft for me
Let me hide myself in Thee
Closing Song | Yet Not I but Through Christ in Me
What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy my righteousness and freedom
My steadfast love my deep and boundless peace
To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to his
Oh how strange and divine I can sing all is mine
Yet not I but through Christ in me
The night is dark but I am not forsaken
For by my side the Savior he will stay
I labour on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need his power is displayed
To this I hold my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley he will lead
Oh the night has been won and I shall overcome
Yet not I but through Christ in me
No fate I dread I know I am forgiven
The future sure the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And he was raised to overthrow the grave
To this I hold my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh the chains are released I can sing I am free
Yet not I but through Christ in me
With every breath I long to follow Jesus
For he has said that he will bring me home
And day by day I know he will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne
To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to him
When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me
