It features stunning works inspired by the vibrant colors of nature and the imagined beauty of our public spaces. Step into Naomi’s unique vision and experience her rich\, expressive palette and designs up close. \nThis in-person event invites art lovers to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty\, delicately captured in acrylic yarns. Don’t miss this evocative visual journey as it ushers in a new season. \nDate: Friday\, March 27\, from 7 to 9 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm.\nLocation: W83 Ministry Center Gallery \nThis event is free. Please get your tickets at this link.  \nAbout the Artist:\nNaomi Lawrence is a NYC Fiber Artist based in East Harlem. She works with acrylic yarn to create oversized 2-Dimensional crochet flowers\, trees and wildlife. The site-specific installations are sewn onto chain-link fences in parks and public spaces. \nOriginally from England\, UK\, the first installation she created in 2014\, Blue Iris endeared her to the East Harlem community that she now calls home. Her installations take a few months to create but have been approved by the city to stay in place for up to one year. They are often washed and refurbished to be reinstalled in various locations such as school playgrounds. Public engagement is a primary goal of each installation. The works become part of the urban landscape\, and their audience is made up of people who live\, work\, and pass by the sites in their daily lives. Her work has become in demand by arts organizations and city agencies. \nLawrence studied Floral Design at the University of the Arts in London\, 2007 and worked as a florist before immigrating to the U.S. She has been knitting since 1999 and crocheting since 2009. Naomi’s work is freeform crochet and does not follow a pattern. She works with photographs so that she can reproduce subtle changes in color found in nature. \nNaomi and her family relocated to East Harlem from London England 12 years ago and in 2023 became United States citizens. As a family\, they are committed to their neighborhood and enjoy raising their 4 children here in New York. \n“Feeling close to our neighbors\, school families and community organizations across the area and committing to our neighborhood has been essential in putting down roots and thriving as a family unit” says Lawrence. \n“I love that neighbors and their children are familiar with my crochet work and so used to seeing them around the streets and parks where they live.” \nNaomi and her husband Chris are members of InnerCHANGE East Harlem\, a Christian order that journeys with those who are marginalized www.innerchange.org

SUMMARY:"Place We Find Ourselves" by Jennifer Ahn | Solo Exhibition and Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Step into the captivating world of Jennifer Ahn’s solo exhibition\, Place We Find Ourselves\, and experience her artistry firsthand. Join us at the W83 Ministry Center for an immersive in-person event\, where each work invites reflection and discovery. Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with this artist’s compelling creations.*Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase artworks on view at the opening. \nDate: Friday\, December 12\, at 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. \nLocation: W83 Ministry Center Gallery \nGet your free tickets at this link. \n\nexhibit statement \nIn Place We Find Ourselves\, Korean-born artist Jennifer Ahn invites us into landscapes that mirror the heart’s journey—through loss and renewal\, wandering and return. Her semi-abstract terrains\, layered with paper\, pigment\, and fragments of Hanji (traditional Korean paper)\, are at once intimate and expansive: spaces where memory\, struggle\, and resilience converge.Forests\, rivers\, and hills in Ahn’s work become vessels of endurance\, their textured surfaces and flowing gestures echoing the rhythms of grief\, hope\, and quiet transformation. Torn paper and embedded fabrics trace paths between fragility and strength\, shadow and light\, suggesting that healing is a layered\, luminous process.Drawing from her Korean heritage and personal experience\, Ahn transforms nature into companion and witness. Her paintings do not depict home as a fixed place but as a state of being—a sanctuary found in reflection\, in the tactile richness of materials\, and in the silent resilience of the world around us.Continuing the inquiry of her 2022 exhibition Desolation | Consolation\, Place We Find Ourselves is a meditation on impermanence\, renewal\, and the subtle\, enduring beauty of becoming whole. Here\, landscapes are not merely seen—they are felt\, guiding us through turbulence toward a quiet\, luminous return.\nartist statement\nPlace We Find Ourselves reflects my journey as a Korean-American\, semi-abstract visual artist who turns to landscapes and nature as both mirror and sanctuary. For me\, painting is not simply about depicting a view—it is about charting a passage through struggle\, transformation\, and return. The terrain of hills\, rivers\, and trees becomes a metaphorical map of human experience\, where moments of turbulence and loss coexist with hope and renewal. Each work arises from layered processes—brushstrokes that suggest movement\, textured surfaces built from paper and pigment\, and colors that oscillate between shadow and radiance. These gestures hold the memory of hardship\, yet they are equally rooted in the possibility of growth. My practice often points toward the idea of home\, not merely as a physical destination but as a state of being: the recognition that we emerge\, through difficulty\, more whole and alive.Texture plays a central role in my practice. I work with papers\, fabric\, and found objects\, which I tear\, strip\, and embed into the surface with a gel medium. These tactile layers catch light\, create shadows\, and extend the painting into a dimensional space. The process of embedding Hanji(traditional Korean paper) is both physical and symbolic: it grounds my work in heritage while transforming fragility into strength.Alongside ink\, gouache\, acrylic\, and oil stick\, these materials become vessels for movement—gestures of chaos and calm\, turbulence and stillness.Place We Find Ourselves invites viewers to see nature as a participant in this journey—a place of witness\, healing\, and quiet victory. In these landscapes\, I hope others may glimpse their own stories of wandering\, struggle\, and the profound return home.

SUMMARY:"Broken Hearts | Broken Souls” Dog Photography by Maria Camila Morales
DESCRIPTION:Dogs have a special way of capturing and healing our hearts with their playful energy\, steadfast loyalty\, and boundless affection. As a dog photographer\, Maria Camila is honored to document the deep connection between dogs and their humans. She believes every dog has a unique story\, and it’s her passion to tell those redemptive stories through the lens of her camera. With each photo\, Maria Camila aims to reveal the true character of the relationship between dogs and their humans\, preserving cherished moments that celebrate their spirit and the love they share with us. \n\n\nJoin us at the W83 Ministry Center for this unique event and opening reception; get your free tickets now: redeemerws.com/DogPhotography \nCurated by Adriana Caicedo \n  \n\n\n\n\nARTIST STATEMENT \nLiving on the streets makes people invisible. The streets destroy both their physical and mental health. The daily struggle is simply to survive. Stray dogs have a similar journey. Left behind\, abandoned\, scared and looking for a way to avoid death every day. But sometimes homeless people facing financial\, political\, or addiction situations find in stray dogs their salvation. And it works both ways as New Yorker Paul Auster so brilliantly recounted in his masterpiece “Timbuktu”. Who saves who when their lives intersect? United in pain\, in oblivion and counting only on each other to make it through each day. Such love\, connection\, and trust cannot be expressed in words. \n“Broken Hearts | Broken Souls” is a tribute to all those people who\, in their immense pain and struggle\, have bonded with a stray dog to ensure mutual survival and love\, living and working on the streets of Bogotá\, London\, Paris\, and New York. These images seek to convey that special bond. It is also a way to thank Americans for their solidarity with the campaign in favor of adopting strays and unwanted dogs – Adopt Don’t Shop. The US continues to be one of the countries with the most “international” stray dog adoptions and New York City leads the way. \n\n\nFollow Maria Camila Morales on Instagram here: @pawsingdogphotography \n\n\n“Street Magician”\, 2023\n16 x 20 in \nON VIEW from Friday\, June 27 through Sunday\, August 24\, 2025\nARTIST TALK on Friday\, July 18 from 7 to 9 pm

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: “In and Out of the Blue” by Misako OBA
DESCRIPTION:Doors will open at 6:30 pm. \n\n\nCome join us for a thoughtful conversation with artist Misako OBA. Delve into the world of art as Misako shares insights into her latest exhibition\, which explores and reflects on the emotional and spiritual aftermath of life’s most unexpected and turbulent events—those that arrive “out of the blue.” This in-person event will be held at the W83 Ministry Center\, providing a unique opportunity to connect with the artist and gain a deeper understanding of her creative process. Don’t miss out on this chance to be inspired and engage with art in a meaningful way! \n\n\n\n\nDrawing on personal experience and a deep empathy for others\, the artist presents a series of layered works exploring grief\, resilience\, and renewal. \nThrough a fusion of ancient techniques and contemporary materials\, encaustic alongside poetry\, scientific data\, and code\, her work reflects on the fragility of existence\, the strength of the human spirit\, and the search for meaning amid chaos. \nThe exhibition reimagines “blue” as emotion\, color\, and metaphor—honoring the beauty\, sorrow\, and inner power of our human and spiritual journeys. “In and Out of the Blue” also stands as a tribute to the strength of those who support us through life’s darkest moments. It celebrates the kindness that nurtures healing and the communities that uplift us. \nMisako’s exhibition invites us to find solace\, renewal\, and solidarity —and reminds us that through empathy and collective life moments\, we can rebuild not only ourselves\, but the communities we call home. \n\n\nGet your tickets at this link. \nThis exhibit runs through Sunday\, June 8.  \n

SUMMARY:"Show Up and Show Out" Art Exhibit Opening Reception by AHRC NYC’s Fisher Center Artists
DESCRIPTION:The W83 Gallery and the AHRC New York City Foundation present “Show Up and Show Out“\, an exhibition by artists who attend the Fisher Center\, a day program that serves adults with intellectual disabilities in East Harlem. \nThe interests of the artists span a broad range of subject matter\, including portraits\, flowers\, cartoon characters\, famous singers and movie stars\, letters\, geometry and abstraction.
