The streets destroy both their physical and mental health. The daily struggle is simply to survive. Stray dogs have a similar journey. Left behind\, abandoned\, scared and looking for a way to avoid death every day. But sometimes homeless people facing financial\, political\, or addiction situations find in stray dogs their salvation. And it works both ways as New Yorker Paul Auster so brilliantly recounted in his masterpiece “Timbuktu”. Who saves who when their lives intersect? United in pain\, in oblivion and counting only on each other to make it through each day. Such love\, connection\, and trust cannot be expressed in words. \n“Broken Hearts | Broken Souls” is a tribute to all those people who\, in their immense pain and struggle\, have bonded with a stray dog to ensure mutual survival and love\, living and working on the streets of Bogotá\, London\, Paris\, and New York. These images seek to convey that special bond. It is also a way to thank Americans for their solidarity with the campaign in favor of adopting strays and unwanted dogs – Adopt Don’t Shop. For over a decade\, my company\, Elegantees\, has been employing survivors of human trafficking\, and women that were at risk\, to make the clothing. The redemptive workshop in Kathmandu\, Nepal is restoring lives\, one elegant tee at a time” – K.M \nJoin us for Sewn to Restore to see the visual story by designer Katie Martinez\, Founder of Elegantees.com through the lens of Prabin Kumari-Karki. Experience at this exhibit and fashion show a representation of healing\, dignity\, and hope\, through empowerment\, and the fight against slavery and human trafficking. \nElegantees fashion show will be held at W83 during NYFW on Saturday\, September 7 at 5 pm. \nKatie is a fashion designer and justice focused entrepreneur. She is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology\, founded a clothing company in 2010 that is still here today\, and loves to use her gifts to fight human trafficking. DESCRIPTION:The W83 Gallery and the AHRC New York City Foundation present “Show Up and Show Out“\, an exhibition by artists who attend the Fisher Center\, a day program that serves adults with intellectual disabilities in East Harlem. \nThe interests of the artists span a broad range of subject matter\, including portraits\, flowers\, cartoon characters\, famous singers and movie stars\, letters\, geometry and abstraction. A love of color is a central theme of the work. \nThrough their artwork\, the artists gain a sense of purpose\, accomplishment and self-esteem. They also find a sense of community in the art studios at the center as the artists work together to realize their projects. \nWe hope this exhibition shows that creativity lives in everyone\, and that all people bring their own aesthetic sensibility to the world. \nExhibit opens on Friday\, December 1 and runs through Monday\, January 29.  \nTICKETS
