Welcome | Rev. Alan Charnock, Director of Community Engagement

Call to Worship | from Revelation 7:10, 12
Leader: Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.
All: Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!

Song of Praise | You Alone
We will sing a new song for You
Of Your power, salvation, and truth
You are the victory
You can never be moved
On our knees we will worship You, Lord
On our knees we will worship You, Lord
Here with this offering
We come into Your courts

(Chorus)
Splendor and might, beauty and light
You alone are the Lord
You alone are the Lord
Glory and strength, great is Your name
You alone are the Lord
You alone are the Lord
Trembling here at Your feet
The whole earth, the whole earth is singing

Let our idols fall worthless aside
Those glittering, treacherous lies
We come to the richness
Of the Lord God on high
Let the seas rejoice with a shout
Let the fields and the forests cry out
Creation exulting
Let us sing it out loud!

(Chorus)

Song of Praise | Happy and Blessed
Blessed are the ones
Whose sins are forgiven
Freed from the curse
Of dishonest living
All their misdeeds
Are not held against them
How happy and blessed are the ones

(Chorus)
In my silence, I wasted away
Through my groaning each night and each day
But your hand that was heavy
Now shows me the way
O how happy and blessed are the ones

Blessed are the ones
Whose fault they admit to
And freely confess
The wrongs they can’t undo
He opens the door
And says “I forgive you”
How happy and blessed are the ones

(Chorus)

Bridge (4x)
Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, and be glad
Sing, all you upright in heart

Blessed are the ones
Now walking in freedom
Safe in the light
Of Christ and his kingdom
Learning from him
And all of his wisdom
How happy and blessed are the ones

Chorus (2x)

Prayer of Adoration (Concluded by the Lord’s Prayer)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Silent Praise and Thanksgiving

Doxology | I Love You Lord/Holy, Holy, Holy
I love You Lord

And I lift my voice

To worship You

O my soul, rejoice

Take joy, my King

In what You hear

May it be a sweet, sweet sound

In Your ear

Holy, holy, holy (I love You Lord)
Lord God Almighty (And I lift my voice)
All Thy works shall praise Thy name (To worship You)
In earth, and sky, and sea (O my soul, rejoice)
Holy, holy, holy (Take joy, my King)
Merciful and mighty (In what You hear)
God in three Persons (May it be a sweet, sweet sound)
Blessed Trinity (In your ear)

Prayer of Confession
O Lord, you have mercy on all.
Take away my sins, and mercifully kindle in me the fire of your Holy Spirit.
Take away my heart of stone and give me a heart of flesh, a heart to love and adore you, a heart to
delight in you, to follow and to enjoy you, for Christ’s sake.
Amen.

Silent Confession

Words of Encouragement | Acts 13:38-39
Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin.

Prayers of the People

Song of Response | So Great Is Your Love
You are compassionate and gracious
Slow to anger, abounding in love
For as high as the heavens
Are above all the earth

So great is your love
Your love for those who fear You
As far as the east is from the west
So far have you removed my sins
From me, from me

For you remember how you’ve made us
Out of earth, returning again
My life blooms like a flower
In a field, then it’s gone

Scripture Reading | Genesis 4:1-16
1 Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”

13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. (NIV)

Sermon | The Subtlety and Strategy of Sin by Rev. Andrew Field

Song of Response | I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto Me and rest
Lay down, thou weary one
Lay down thy head upon My breast.”

I came to Jesus as I was
So weary, worn, and sad
I found in Him a resting place
And He has made me glad

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
The living water; thirsty one
Stoop down, and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;

My thirst was quenched, my soul revived
And now I live in Him

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light;

Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise
And all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
In Him my star, my sun
And in that light of life I’ll walk
Till traveling days are done.

Song of Response | Joy Comes in the Morning
Praise you when I’m overwhelmed
Praise you in my brokenness
Praise you so I don’t forget
Who you are
Who you are
Praise you when I’ve lost my way
Praise you when I’m so afraid
Praise you ‘cause it doesn’t change
Who you are
Who you are

Weeping may endure for the night
But joy comes in the morning
(Repeat)

Praise you when I’m empty handed
Praise you when I feel abandoned
Praise you cause I’m not alone
You see me
You see me
Praise you when the road is long
Praise you when my faith is gone
Praise you cause you hear the song
I’m singing
I’m singing

I will fear no evil
I know you are with me
Closer than I think you are
Closer than I think you are
Fighting all my battles
Lighting every shadow
Closer than I think you are
Closer than I think you are

Prayer of Thanksgiving
All: Gracious Lord, we give you thanks for calling us out of the darkness and into your glorious light. When we remember the price you paid, the death of your only Son, we wonder and marvel at the greatness of your love. We give our lives to you Lord, and pray that through your Spirit you would teach us how to live according to your will. Send us out now to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of your mercy. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
