While New York is a great city, it can also wear on us over the course of time. So it’s only natural that during the summer months, so many New Yorkers spend significant time away from the city. For those fortunate enough to travel, we welcome this reprieve with the hope of starting a new year with freshness and energy.
When you spend any significant amount of time living in another place, it does something to you. The values, norms, and rhythms of that place begin to shape you in such a way that when you return home, you see it in a different light. You may start to question some of the practices of your home city. “Why are we so busy? Why are we always grinding?” You may also feel fresh appreciation for the things you missed. “It’s nice not to be stuck in traffic all the time. I love the arts and the diversity here.”
For the Christian, our true home is in another world, even while we’re living in New York (or wherever you may reside). The more our hearts are immersed in the life and rhythms of our eternal city, the better we’ll be able to face the demands of life here with joy and resilience. During these summer months, how might you spend your time so that you’re not just enjoying different places and experiences but renewing your heart in Jesus? Giving some intentional thought and time to that might be the most impactful thing you do this summer.
Warmly,
Paul

This is an initial meeting to gather neighbors, business owners, and superintendents who are interested in making West 83rd Street between Amsterdam and Columbus a cleaner and more communal block. Congregants, especially neighbors, are encouraged to attend, enjoy wine and cheese, and discuss what we appreciate about the block and what we wish to improve. Register here.
