Beginning in Chapter 3 and running through the end of Chapter 4 Paul launches into the key error that Christians struggle against. Paul shows that the gospel that saves us is the gospel that also grows us. Paul’s approach is to get his readers to wrestle with the key question: Are you seeking to complete your Christian life in a manner that is different from how it began? (3:4) A Christian is one who grows through the presence and power of the Spirit that comes through believing what was heard not through ‘works of the law’. Paul then introduces his readers to Abraham to demonstrate that this faithful hero was a ‘man of faith’ who ‘lived by faith’.
