It’s common to think better education will heal the world’s ills. But can education really transform the heart? Learning more about how the world works can lead to despair, especially in the face of long-term, systemic problems or gross injustices. Nevertheless Ecclesiastes says gaining wisdom is like having eyes in your head — to simply see the world for what it is, however painful, is better than to walk in the dark. Paul says wisdom is in the cross, a gross injustice but which reveals the cruciform heart of God and of reality.
