The first sermon reveals the nature of the human heart and its resistance to God’s wisdom. This sermon demonstrates the external consequences of our rejection of God. As Derek Kidner wrote: “Sin…sets up strains in the structure of life which can only end in breakdown.” The sermon is an opportunity to discuss why the world experiences ‘storms’, the various explanations for the breakdown as well as the way God uses the storms of life to refine our faith and draw us back to Himself.
