In her book about Jesus’ death on the cross, Fleming Rutledge wrote:
Christianity is unique. The world’s religions have certain traits in common, but until the gospel of Jesus Christ burst upon the Mediterranean world, no one in the history of human imagination had conceived of such a thing as the worship of a crucified man… The peculiarity of this beginning for a world-transforming faith is not sufficiently acknowledged.
This Friday, Redeemer West Side will offer two different Good Friday services. You’re invited to both or either. During each of the services we’ll have a chance to reflect on and rejoice in what the death of Jesus means for us, for our city, and for our world. Through singing, praying, Scripture readings, and teaching, we’ll encounter afresh how Jesus’ death confronts and comforts us.
And ultimately, Christians believe that Good Friday is good news because it wasn’t the end of the story. Worship on Easter Sunday is the church’s joyful declaration that Jesus was victorious over evil, sin, and death. His resurrection is the beginning of all the world’s sadness coming untrue.
As you gather with us for worship on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, do consider bringing a friend along, so that they might consider how Jesus’ death-defeating death all those years ago can change their life today.
In hope,
Pastor Bijan
