WS Update: The Invitation

September 11, 2023

Earlier this summer The Atlantic published an article titled “How to Escape ‘the Worst Possible Timeline’” in which the author reflected upon the broad cultural pessimism that seems to have settled over our national dialogue like clouds blocking out the sun. Her recommendation was essentially a mindset shift:

To break out of the spiral of doom requires not just practical social change, but also a collective reimagining of what the world can be.

In other words, a vision of a different way of living out of our shared humanity. Yesterday I reflected on that through the invitation Jesus offers in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Jesus’ invitation is more than an opportunity for individuals to find contentment, but one that offers a ‘collective reimagining’ under his rule as King. At the beginning of his earthly ministry, Jesus announced that “the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17). We will spend the fall exploring the implications of that announcement as we look at his Sermon on the Mount starting this Sunday with a sermon entitled “The World According to Jesus.”

In the meantime, as you begin another week take time to consider what it means to be ‘yoked’ to Jesus and the soul rest he offers. Bring your burdens to him, knowing that because of his life, death, and resurrection there is no condemnation awaiting you and no burden he hasn’t already experienced. He is gentle and humble in heart, and is waiting for you to come to him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-20
