“O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you?” (Mark 9:19). In other words, why is belief so hard? “I believe, help my unbelief!” (v. 24). Jesus bemoans the lack of faith in his disciples, who could not help a father with his spirit-possessed son. “All things are possible to the one who believes” (v. 24). Belief is not just a matter of intellectual assent (v. 16: “arguing”) but the exercise of faith, or prayer as Jesus calls it here (v. 29). Unsure about Christianity? Build on and move beyond arguments and doing, and try out faith in Jesus for yourself—pray.
