“Who do people say that I am?” (Mark 8:27). In other words, does it really matter who Jesus is? This is the classic passage in which Peter rightfully identifies Jesus as the messiah. While he knows Jesus is the messiah, he doesn’t know who the messiah is. He doesn’t know that as messiah, Jesus must suffer many things, be rejected and killed. Jesus calls his followers to the same cross-bearing life. In doing so they discover their true selves.
