The text offers an opportunity to explore the human longing for something sacred (eternal life) as well as the disposition to see it as something we can attain. In this particular case the one asking the question was a religious and good man who is quickly exposed by Jesus as one “whose money was for him what the Father was for Jesus” (King’s Cross). Only by seeing and accepting the impossibility of our situation and the power that comes through the generosity of Jesus can the question be answered.
