The gospel not only leads to individual transformation (last week’s text) but corporate as well. Barriers that in the past kept people separated (circumcision in this case) have been removed by Christ’s death allowing for a new community to be forged. Paul is the ambassador for this new unity, confirmed in this text through the right hand of fellowship (2:9). There is a recognition by the ‘old guard’ (Peter, James, John) that God is at work in both the Jewish and Gentile community. Again we see that this unity is fragile and under constant attack and requires constant diligence (2:5) and personal connection and conversation.
