Book: Psalm

We Are His

Scripture: Psalm 100

The Heidelberg Catechism opens with this question and answer: “What is your only comfort in life and in death? That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.” This psalm says, “It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” One modern narrative says the opposite: You are your own, so possess, shape, determine yourself. This is burdensome and actually an illusion—we are probably far more shaped than we’d like to admit. Paul agrees with the psalmist: ”You are not your own, for you were bought with a price” (1 Cor 6:20).
