WS Update: The Power of Prayer

November 3, 2025

Imagine for a moment that you’ve been told the location of a buried treasure and given everything you need to dig it up. This treasure is of enormous value: it would not only change your life, but with it, you could do a great deal of good in the world. And yet, having the knowledge of its whereabouts and the tools you need to unearth it, you choose to leave it buried in the ground—of no value to you or anyone else.

John Calvin, the 16th-century pastor, said that’s what Christians do whenever they neglect the practice of prayer:

To know God as the master and bestower of all good things, who invites us to request them of him, and still not to go to him–this would be as of little profit as a man to neglect a treasure, buried and hidden in the earth, after it had been pointed out to him… It is, therefore, by the benefit of prayer that we reach those riches which are laid up for us with the Heavenly Father.

Communing with God in prayer is a privilege of the Christian life. We can run to him in prayer, not only to ask things of him, but just to get him. After all, he himself is our “exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1).

If you’d like to go deeper in prayer or join with others in prayer but aren’t sure where to start, consider one of the resources or opportunities in our church. Click here to access our Prayer webpage.

With hope,

Pastor Bijan

Twice a year, all six Redeemer churches gather for this special evening of worship, prayer, and stories of God at work in our city. It’s one of the only times we come together as a whole network, reminding us we’re part of something bigger than our individual congregations: a movement of the Gospel in New York City. After our time of prayer and praise, stay to connect with others across the Redeemer family over light refreshments. Join us at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, hosted by Redeemer Lincoln Square. Bonus: The first 150 people who enter the building receive keepsake ornaments!
