WSUpdate: Why We Fight

May 27, 2024

James gets to the heart of our conflicts by pointing us to our desires. James 4:1 says, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?” (NIV). The word desires in that phrase is literally a hyper-desire, an inordinate longing for something that goes beyond what it can give. In other places we would translate that as idolatry or enslavement. When two or more people, each with their own out of control desires clash, it’s inevitable that a conflict ensues. It might seem like an argument about money but underneath it is a battle of: control vs. freedom, adventure vs. security, or who is in charge. When the love of that inner desire is greater than the love of the other person at the moment, the fight is essentially the willingness to sacrifice that person for the hyper-desire. Jesus is the antidote, sacrificing himself for the other person; laying down his life in love for his people. The One who had everything gave it up so we can find it in him.

Join us at The Salvation Army as we worship and pray together to celebrate what God is doing in and through the Redeemer Network of churches and seek the Lord’s wisdom as we embrace our collaborative mission to accelerate a movement of the gospel in NYC.
We trust this time together will be encouraging, as we are reminded that we are truly better together, as we seek the flourishing of New York City.
