WSUpdate: Suffering

April 8, 2024

Everyone faces seasons of suffering, and Christians are no exception. The book of James was written to the early churches scattered because of persecution. These Christians faced “trials of many kinds” (James 1:2). In those situations, faith in Christ produces a particularly hard-fought form of perseverance and wisdom. Character which develops under the strain of difficulties, experienced along with the presence of Jesus, produces an unmatched maturity. There are no shortcuts through the fire, but having persevered, a Christian bears witness to God’s love and care even through the suffering. Curt Thompson’s book, The Deepest Place, is an excellent companion for a journey through suffering, looking at it through the lens of Romans 5, community, grace, and attachment.
